High hat in the rain
Still from "Voice Over"

Nevin Aladaǧ

Voice Over2006

The film projection "Voice Over" features musical instruments designed to produce sound as a result of environmental and natural influences, and young people singing songs they are familiar with from their home countries. The sequences repeat themselves and combine to form a new rhythm.

"Is that a thunderstorm or is it still the sound of the drums? The theme of superimposition is also evidenced in the work's title. In cinematic history, the voice-over, performing the function of a subjective narrator, is best known from film noir. A narrator external to the story comments on events and drives the plot." (From the catalogue for the exhibition "How German is it? 30 Artists' Notion of Home")

Aladaǧ was born in Varn, Turkey, in 1972, and lives and works in Berlin. The Wentrup Gallery's website can be viewed at www.wentrupgallery.com
