Workshop: "It Was As Simple As That"

Workshop on Jewish Childhood and Youth after 1945

What was it actually like to grow up as a Jew in Germany, Austria and Switzerland after 1945? We asked 18 well-known and less-known, more religious and less religious Jews to answer this question and to provide us with a photograph depicting a crucial experience from their childhood and youth.

The snapshots date from 1947 to the early 1990s and show the most varying experiences: Feelings of belonging and of not belonging, little ways to escape from everyday life, hopes and dreams.

The group listen to the stories over headphones and consider the multiple perspectives of the protagonists. In conclusion, the stories are discussed and personal views shared.
