Born in 1967 in Kyoto, Junko Onishi first learnt to play classical piano, but it was not long before she became interested in jazz. After studying the piano for three years in Berklee, she headed for New York where she was enthusiastically welcomed to the jazz scene, performing with Joe Henderson, Betty Carter, Kenny Garrett and the Mingus Dynasty among others. She is particularly inspired by the Japanese pianist Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Ornette Coleman.
