The much cherished poet Rilke found in Eva Cassirer his most generous benefactor, and she in him her mentor. Her surviving letters to him from the war years 1914/1915, her notes on their last meeting before his death, and her own biography show this discrete patron to be one of a kind amongst his friends. Neither an aristocrat nor an artist nor a lover to the poet, she was a representative of that Jewish patronage that played an essential role in German art and literature of the 20th century. At the same time, the correspondence, annotated and edited by Sigrid Bauschinger, throws new light on the poet.
