In 1948, Dimitri Shostakovich stumbled across a Russian translation of a collection of Jewish folk poetry in a Moscow antiquarian bookshop. Although he himself was not of Jewish descent, he was enchanted by these poetic tales. He set them to music to create a song cycle, which is both the most personal work by the Russian composer and a masterful adaptation of Ashkenazic folk culture. In the same year, Shostakovich discovered jazz in New York. He admired the unconstrained forms of interpretation in jazz as much as the frankness he found in Slavic folk music. Working with the jazz ensemble String Trio of New York, the Alkan Ensemble has created an exciting dialog between well developed and spontaneous forms of music, between worlds old and new.

Organized in cooperation with Klassikwerkstatt.
