Central to the festival observance is the lighting of the eight armed candelabrum, the Hanukkiah. According to Hillel, a famous rabbi at the time of Herod, the candles are lit from right to left. Every day a new light is lit until all the lights burn on the last day. Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in the year 165 B.C.E.
