Zeitzeugnisse (Testimonies) is a series of books published from 2001 to 2004 by the Jewish Museum Berlin and DuMont Literatur and Kunst Verlag. Among the titles are art historical studies, biographical essays and historical analyses of individual objects, themes or time periods.

Jewish Forced Laborers at Ehrich & Graetz, Berlin Treptow

Testimonies from the Jewish Museum Berlin

More than 500 Berlin Jews were bound to forced labor at the factory of the metal and electrical company Ehrich & Graetz in Berlin Treptow between autumn 1940 and February 1943. At the "Final Roundup" on 27 February 1943, the last remaining Jewish forced laborers were seized, interned, and then for the most part deported.

Towards the end of the war, two employees saved the passport photographs of the over 500 forced laborers in their company which are now on display in the permanent exhibition at the Jewish Museum Berlin.

Aside from complete documentation of this unique material, the new volume describes the forced laborers' conditions of work and daily life, the story of the company under the National Socialist regime, and narrates the lives and fates of men and women in ten individual biographies.

Founded in 1855, the S.A. Loevy foundry supplied impressive government buildings and private villas with fittings, inscriptions, and extravagantly designed door portals until its "Arisierung" (Aryanization) in 1939. This book follows the history of the Loevy family and company through the time of the empire up to the that of persecution under the National Socialist regime. It tells of the fates of individual family members - for example of Leo Kopf, choir conductor and composer or of Erich Gloeden who was sentenced to death by the People's Court in 1944 for hiding a General involved in the July 20 Hitler assassination attempt - in the name of the German people.
