Barrie Kosky’s celebrated production brings the story of Tevye the Milkman, who lives in the shtetl of Anatevka and wrestles with poverty, Jewish traditions, and his daughters’ independent ideas of love, from Broadway to the Komische Oper Berlin in this German-language adaptation.
Against the backdrop of imminent anti-Jewish pogroms and the decision as to whether Tevye should marry his daughters into prosperity or permit them to choose the man they love, the musical distills issues of family, religion, and fleeing from violence. At the same time, the “life-affirming tragicomedy of marriage and love complications” is touching with its sense of humor and humanity. This is thanks in part to the many dance numbers accompanied by lively Klezmer music under the orchestral direction of Koen Schoots.
