Young and Jewish in East Germany

Book Presentation and Panel Discussion with Witnesses to the Period (In-person, in German)

What was it like to be young and Jewish in former East Germany? What role did family, the Jewish community, the Shoah, and the non-Jewish and social environment play in these young Jews’ sense of self?

Sandra Anusiewicz-Baer and Lara Dämmig recount a little-known chapter of German-Jewish history through interviews with East German Jews who grew up in the GDR’s Jewish communities as well as photographs, mementos, letters, postcards, and diary entries.

The point of departure is the children’s summer camp organized by the Union of Jewish Communities in the GDR, which gathered annually on the Baltic starting in 1961. It is emblematic of a sheltered Jewish meeting place, but also one out of sight of the majority population.
