Café Nagler Returns!

Film Screening (Hebrew with German subtitles) and Discussion with the Filmmaker Mor Kaplansky

When the young Israeli filmmaker Mor Kaplansky’s family has something to celebrate, the table is laid up with the fine cutlery from Berlin's Café Nagler. Family legends surround the café at Moritzplatz, which was run by the Kaplanskys until their immigration to Palestine in 1925 – artists and intellectuals of the Weimar Republic from Einstein to Kafka met there and even Swing was invented there.

When Mor arrives in Berlin to explore the café’s history, however, all she finds is an overgrown park. A little research later, Mor is certain that Nagler was never as legendary as the family stories claim. In order not to disappoint her grandmother, who is eagerly awaiting the first film footage, Mor has to delve deep into the documentary trick box.

A discussion with Mor Kaplansky – who will be giving documents, photographs, and objects from Café Nagler to the Jewish Museum Berlin Archive – will follow the film screening.
