Damascus With Love
Film Showing in English as Part of the Film and Reading Series Between Marrakesh and Mashhad
Feature film, Syria 2010, 91 min, directed by: Mohamad Abdul Aziz, original Arabic version with English subtitles
Shortly before her planned immigration to Italy, Syrian Jew Hala learns that her long-lost love, Nabil, is still alive. She returns to the ancient city of Damascus and from there goes on a poetic and sometimes absurd journey through Syria in search of the love of her life. On her way, she discovers not only her own past, but also the past and the beauty of her country.
The tragicomic road movie was completed shortly before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war and is a plea for a multiconfessional, multicultural Syria.
As a prelude Viola Shafik, filmmaker, curator, and film expert will hold a talk entitled Film, Confessionalism, and Nostalgia.
