Iraq N' Roll
Film Screening as Part of the Series Between Marrakesh and Mashhad. Jews in Islamic Countries (in Hebrew and Arabic with English subtitles)
In this intimate documentary, filmmaker Gili Gaon accompanies the Israeli rock musician Dudu Tassa on a journey to his musical heritage. Dudu's grandfather Daud al-Kuwaity, along with his brother Saleh, were among Iraq’s most successful musicians and composers in the 1930s.
When the brothers returned to Israel in the 1950s, their Jewish-Arab music was no longer popular and fell into oblivion. Dudu discovers his cultural roots in the al-Kuwaity's music and decides to reinterpret their works – and thus embarks upon a very personal musical dialog between generations and cultures.
