The jazz musician and composer Defne Şahin takes her listeners on a musical journey to Istanbul, Berlin, and New York. She combines the melancholy of Turkish music with the ease of the Bossa Nova. In her debut album "Yaşamak," Defne Şahin sets poems by the famous Turkish poet Nâzım Hikmet to music. The album was released in 2011 as part of the "Next Generation" series by the renowned German jazz magazine "Jazz thing" and was praised by the press as "the beginning of a successful career." Defne Şahin – a New York-based artist of Turkish origin – is accompanied by Tino Derado (piano), Simon Quinn (bass), and Martin Krümmling (percussion).
Parallel to the concerts, children can bake matzah bread in the Museum Garden’s clay oven in good weather and print their name in Hebrew on T-shirts in unfavorable weather.
Culinary accompaniment for each event is provided by the museum café “Schmus” in the form of fresh and light dishes and a picnic basket especially for the jazz matinées, which makes the concert experience in the garden a really special one.
