Composed around the same time as Arnold Schoenberg’s opera, which is based on the Book of Exodus, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny was more covert about its references to the Hebrew Bible, though they remain unmistakable. An opera and anti-opera at once, Mahagonny explores the pitfalls of human existence.
