Responsible Eating: Ecology and Dietary Laws in the Same Pot

Perspectives on Religious Food Regulations – Dialogical Lecture Series (In-person and via Livestream in German)

Ethical issues such as sustainable consumption, equitable distribution, climate-friendly food systems, environmental production, and factory farming dominate contemporary debates around eating. It is impossible to sit down for a meal without confronting questions of animal rights, the environment, the climate, and social justice. How can we frame Jewish dietary laws in the context of today’s appeals for environmental responsibility? What points of reference for environmental protection and species conservation can be found in Judaism? And are the religious norms competing de-facto with these contemporary norms? Rabbi Avichai Apel and the philosopher Thomas Mohrs will discuss these questions.
