Homosexuality in a strictly religious environment is the theme of Israeli director Haim Tabakman’s award-winning feature film debut Du sollst nicht lieben (Engl. title Eyes Wide Open). With great sensitivity and almost in documentary form, he tells the story of the butcher Aaron Fleischmann, who lives as a respected member of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Jerusalem. When Aaron, husband and father of four children falls in love with 19-year-old student Ezri, he initially sees his feelings as a religious trial. Eventually, however, the men give in to their passion – and pressure from the community on Aaron grows….
