People discussing the conflict in Israel/Palestine in Hebrew or Arabic often call it simply “the situation.” Yael Ronen invokes this phrase and incorporates it into her work, which frequently addresses complex and fraught themes.
The Situation, directed by the house director of the Gorki Theater (with English surtitles), shifts negotiations over the Israel/Palestine conflict to a Berlin “integration course,” where young Israelis, Palestinians, and Germans explore their identities afresh. We are delighted at the return of this play, which critics chose as 2016’s Play of the Year, and see it as a welcome supplement to our current temporary exhibition Welcome to Jerusalem.
