With her ensemble of Israeli, German, and Palestinian actors, Yael Ronen is restaging her acclaimed play Third Generation after a decade. The political situation in Berlin provides plenty of reasons to unearth this play. By now, there are thousands of new Berliners who grew up in the Middle East, both from Israel and from Arabic-speaking countries.
The “next generation” shares its perspectives on the “third generation” after the period of Nazi rule. Together, they seek ideas for the future at a moment when suddenly, many non-Jewish Germans are eager to put that past behind them, once and for all – despite the persistence of antisemitism and anti-Muslim racism.
