In the early 70s, life in the Bronx was shaped by violence, drugs, and crime and many young residents united to form gangs in order to survive.
The graphic novel "Ghetto Brother" tells the true story of Benjamin Melendez, a gang member who initiated a highly regarded peace deal between the New York gangs in 1971. Instead of gang warfare, the Bronx was now talked about for its music, DJs, and graffiti scene. In this spirit of optimism, Benjamin Melendez embarked upon another journey in search of his Puerto Rican-Jewish roots.
Illustrator Claudia Ahlering will paint live, author Julian Voloj will read and talk about his encounter and collaboration with Benjamin Melendez, while DJ Marc Hype will play the beats of the time.
