Words in the Garden: "Ismaels Orangen" (Ishmael's oranges)

Reading with the Author Claire Hajaj and the Actor Ilja Richter (in English and German)

In her recently published debut novel, Claire Hajaj tells the story of a fateful love – a Jewish woman whose family survived the Holocaust and a Palestinian whose family lost everything through the founding of the state of Israel fall in love and get married in London in the 1960s. Two seemingly irreconcilable worlds collide. As daughter of a Jewish mother and a Palestinian father, Claire Hajaj tells of this ordeal for a family with much empathy for both sides. "Ishmael’s oranges" is both a stirring novel about the author’s life story and a different perspective of the Middle East conflict.
