Nathan und seine Kinder (Nathan and His Children)

Three Workshops on Mirjam Pressler’s Novel for Young People (German only)

Mirjam Pressler’s novel Nathan und seine Kinder (Nathan and His Children) is set in late-twelfth-century Jerusalem and is based on Lessing’s play Nathan the Wise. The central topic is every bit as important today as it was back then: the peaceful coexistence of people from different religious and cultural backgrounds.

We offer three different workshops on this novel for students aged 13 to 18 (German only) :

  1. An educational theater workshop that revolves around the question of identity. It can serve as an introduction to the novel before it is read.
  2. Object-related work on Moses Mendelssohnthat uses objects and historical accounts to give students a better understanding of Moses Mendelssohn as a person and his ideas about the Enlightenment. This workshop focuses on the period in which Lessing wrote Nathan the Wise.
  3. A workshop that teaches participants to interact critically with religious quotations. The basis of this workshop is the religious quotations from the Torah, the New Testament, and the Quran that can be found in the novel. It provides ideas for further treatment of this subject in the classroom.
