Who am I? How Did I Get This Way?

Student Workshop on Identity

Because there are so many dimensions to the question "Who am I?" this workshop for students aged 14 to 18 goes far beyond Jewish topics and encourages participants to reflect on identity in a heterogeneous society.

The teenagers playfully explore questions about the self, similarities, and differences, and discuss the opportunities and challenges posed by diversity in our society.

Methodological Diversity When Teaching Identity

Using "biography boxes" that feature selected quotes, materials, and objects, the students become acquainted with different identities and listen to interviews that center on the life stories of various people living in Germany today. They examine the meaning of ancestry, faith, and gender for identity and affiliation.

In interviews with their partners, the students then discuss classifications, discrimination, and challenges in our heterogeneous society. In simple theatrical exercises, they reflect on their perceptions, their self-image, and how others see them. Working on stage, they are given the opportunity to develop new courses of action.
