Charlotte Salomon, Jew, born in Berlin in 1917, emigrated to France in 1939, murdered in Auschwitz in 1943. Two years before her death she begins to reinterpret her life through painting and writing. In her picture cycle "Life? or Theatre?", subtitled "The Tricolor Singespiel", she concentrates her life to a few persons, dividing it into Prelude, Main Section and Epilogue. As in a drama, the characters figuring in the play are given fictitious names. Is it her life? Or is it theater?

From this dramatic template, the actress Joanne Gläsel has developed a stage version, which will be premiered in the Jewish Museum on 1 September 2007. A short version of the one-woman show will be previewed on the Long Night of Museums in the Jewish Museum. Slipping into all of the roles, she expands the total work of art into three-dimensional space, acting, singing, and telling stories to show how a person in a hopeless situation can master her particular fate.
