The Jewish Museum Berlin is celebrating 10 years of existence with a diverse anniversary program this fall.

Gala Concert with Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin

The anniversary week commences with Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle playing Anton Bruckner’s 7th Symphony in Berlin’s Philharmonic Hall.

When: Monday 24 October 2011, 7 pm

"Between the Lines" – A Literary Stroll through the City

Introduction by Daniel Libeskind

Young authors were inspired by biographies at the Leo Baeck Archive at the Jewish Museum Berlin. Starting with a look at Berlin’s topography, from which Daniel Libeskind developed the architecture for the Jewish Museum Berlin, you are invited to a virtual stroll through the city with texts written especially for the evening.

In cooperation with the New York Leo Baeck Institute and the University of Hildesheim

"10th Grade Day"

Sixty free tours for 10th grade classes, four workshops for one hundred 10th graders from Berlin, and a film showing of "Roots Germania" followed by a discussion with Mo Asumang. To round off this day, the "Ohrbooten" will play live for all students, teachers, friends, museum visitors, and fans. The winners of the first school band competition at the Jewish Museum Berlin will play as the support act.

Identity and integration, exclusion and belonging, forced assimilation and parallel worlds: What is German in the 21st century? In conversations, brief talks, and discussions, the Anniversary symposium explores the state of the nation from a variety of perspectives.

Sayed Kashua tells the skillfully woven story of two Arab Israelis whose burning desire is to be part of Jewish Israel.

Concert with Daniel Kahn & Psoy Korolenko: The Painted Bird & The Unternationale

In their "distorted klezmer," the music artist from Detroit, Daniel Kahn, and the avant-garde singer from Moscow, Psoy Korolenko, mix klezmer, punk, and folklore – in English, Yiddish, and Russian.

The anniversary symposium is a cooperation with the Einstein Forum and the "DeutschPlus – Initiative."

Where: All symposium events (excluding the reading with Sayed Kashua) will be held in the Glass Courtyard.

Symposium admission fee: 13 €, reduced rate 9 € (including evening concert and prelude event on Friday evening)

The dance company of 9 to 14 year olds directed by the dancer and choreographer Gabriel Galindez Cruz has created a new program for the anniversary that sees its premiere today.

3 pm Birthday Cake and the Rathaus Ramblers

Cilly Kugelmann, program director at the Jewish Museum Berlin, and Michael Naumann, who has a long-standing connection to the museum and is chair of the Friends of the Jewish Museum Berlin, cut the birthday cake from Cynthia Barcomi. And the Rathaus Ramblers play Hot New Orleans Jazz.

In the time around anniversary week, the Jewish Museum Berlin will close earlier on two days: on Friday 21 October at 5 pm and Monday 24 October at 7.30 pm. Please inform your readers and listeners of these altered opening hours. Otherwise the museum is open seven days a week from 10 am to 8 pm, on Mondays even to 10 pm.
