Events in December 2010

Press Invitation

Press Release, Mon 29 Nov 2010

We cordially invite you to these cultural events in December:

Raphael Gross: Anständig geblieben. Nationalsozialistische Moral

(Nazi Morality: A History of German Moral Sentiments)

Dan Diner Talks to the Author

Honor, loyalty, disgrace, and camaraderie – Raphael Gross presents the first moralistic historical perspective of Nazi history in his book. He shows that it was first a system of reciprocally demanded feelings and virtues that made the enthusiasm of the German population for the Nazi "Volksgemeinschaft" possible. It shaped political speeches, school books, and the only seemingly apolitical entertainment sector. And it didn’t disappear immediately with the military defeat of 1945.

Musical Sundays at the Hanukkah Market

Klezmer Concert: Duo Wajlu

A soprano and an alto voice, an accordion, and a violin are all the musicians Katharina Müther and Roswitha Dasch use to create an orchestral sound. That is the musical signature of Duo Wajlu.

Their concert program "Vu mirtn grinen – Wo Myrten grünen" is a rousing journey through the most varied countries and languages of Eastern Europe, through traditional and new Yiddish songs to the roots of klezmer music and the cradle of Yiddish song culture.

When: 5 December 2010, 2 and 4 pm

Where: Glass Courtyard, ground level, at the Hanukkah Market

Admission: free

Klezmer Concert: Di Meschugeles

The young band Di Meschugeles brings to the stage traditional klezmer as it was played at the beginning of the 20th century before it was forgotten for a long time. The music is free from modern or fashionable influences and any form of distortion. Committed to its origins, Di Meschugeles plays klezmer to make you laugh, cry and – last but not least – dance.

When: 12 December 2010, 2 and 4 pm

Where: Glass Courtyard, ground level, at the Hanukkah Market

Admission: free

Klezmer Concert: A Glezele Vayn

The Berlin quartet will present an unusual klezmer program at the Hanukkah Market: Eastern European klezmer and Yiddish wedding dances enriched with traditional Balkan tunes, Alpine sounds, and a variety of own compositions. The audience can expect a stirring and passionate performance.

When: 19 December 2010, 2 and 4 pm

Where: Glass Courtyard, ground level, at the Hanukkah Market

Admission: free

Klezmer Concert: Klezmer chidesch

Klezmer chidesch – the "klezmer miracle" of international renown brings a buoyant and soul-stirring atmosphere to every music hall with its swift pace. The four musical souls unite nostalgia, melancholy, love, and cheer in the attitude to life that is klezmer. Mixing classic elements with groovy jazz rhythms, they let improvisations of Hasidic tunes and Jewish folk songs flow into their music.

When: 26 December 2010, 2 and 4 pm

Where: Glass Courtyard, ground level, at the Hanukkah Market

Admission: free
