Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem by the Maccabees following their victory over the Syrians in 165 BCE. One of the miracles celebrated at Hanukkah is the kosher oil that kept the temple menorah burning. Although there was only enough oil to keep the menorah alight for one day, it continued to burn for eight days and eight nights. In commemoration of this miracle, the Hanukkah festival is eight days long – this year from 21 to 28 December.

The heart of the Hanukkah celebrations is the lighting of the eight-armed candle, the Hanukkah menorah. During the Hanukkah festival, visitors can watch the lighting of the Hanukkah candle on the eve of each day of the Hanukkah festival (from 20 to 27 December) at dusk, until on the final day all eight candles are burning.

The Hanukkah Market that has been held regularly at the Jewish Museum since 2005 is having a break this year. Please note this in your announcements.

Hanukkah Quarrel at the Cohen’s
Jewish Hanukkah Marionette Show

Family festivals are not always harmonious at the Cohen’s either. How things go at the Cohen’s Hanukkah celebration and which miracles happened in Biblical Jerusalem can be seen in this special performance at the Jewish Museum Berlin. Monumental foam puppets, created and animated by Jewish artists from Berlin, take the audience on an imaginary journey accompanied by the extremely talkative goat, Golda, and the rather quiet Judah Maccabee. This funky, colorful production promises children great and small true insights and good entertainment.
When Sunday 4 and 11 December at 4 pm
Monday 19 December to Thursday 22 December at 10 am
Where Old Building, ground level, Auditorium
Duration approx. 1 hour
