Old Homeland – New Homeland

Show & Tell for the Day of the Archives 2026 (in German)

On the Day of the Archives, archivists from the Jewish Museum Berlin (JMB) will present selected examples from the family collections in two Show & Tell formats and share the stories behind the documents.

Questions of belonging and exclusion are central to many collections in the JMB Archive. They document migration movements – not only, but especially emigration and flight from National Socialist Germany.

How did Jewish emigrants relate to their old homeland? Only a few later returned to Germany – and if they did, it was usually only for brief visits, often to show their children their former home. But how did they perceive the country in which they found refuge? Did it remain a place of exile, or did it become a new homeland? Which memories of the old homeland were preserved?

The event takes place as part of the Day of the Archives, which is organized every two years by the Association of German Archivists (VdA).
