We are seeking to fill a full-time position (39 hours per week) in salary group 13 of the TVöD Bund (collective agreement for federal public service). The starting date is 1 February 2026. The pay grade will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications.
The collections of the Jewish Museum Berlin represent the lives and legacies of German Jews through images, objects, artwork and documents. The archive is part of these collections. The department catalogs, preserves and acquires family collections, personal estates and individual items pertaining to German-Jewish history and culture from the Middle Ages to the present. The holdings are prepared and made available to the public through exhibitions, online presentations and educational programs. The archive also houses a branch of the Leo Baeck Institute Archive, as well as a branch of the Wiener Library in London.

Key responsibilities include
- Managing the JMB’s Archive Department, including staff and budget
- Strategically and conceptually advancing the archive in consultation with other collection departments and the executive management, with special consideration given to digital collectioning
- Overseeing content-related processing and cataloging of collections, estates and other historical source materials
- Work on holdings for presentation
- Advancing the digitization of the Archive’s holdings in alignment with the JMB’s digital strategy
- Advancing the archive’s outreach and educational programs such as workshops, show-and-tell sessions, and talks with eyewitnesses and second-generation witnesses
- Further developing the Archive’s work on the history of the JMB
- Networking with other archives and institutions that deal with remembrance culture
- Maintaining strong relationships with JMB donors and their beneficiaries
What we are looking for
- A completed university degree in the humanities (ideally a doctorate) in fields such as archival science, contemporary history, Jewish studies or Holocaust studies
- Management experience defined by a collaborative, inclusive and motivating leadership style and a strong team orientation
- Extensive, demonstrable knowledge of German-Jewish history
- Several years of scholarly experience with relevant practical experience in a museum or archive
- Experience in presenting museum holdings both digitally and physically
- Proficiency in using museum databases and managing digitization processes
- Goal-oriented and pragmatic approach to work
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills in both spoken and written German and English
- Strong initiative, willingness to learn, sense of responsibility and diplomatic skills
Desired qualifications
- Additional language skills: Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, Ukrainian
