Peter Schäfer is one of the most renowned Jewish scholars of our time. In his memoirs, he provides deep insights into the development of Jewish studies as a discipline and traces his personal and academic career.
Schäfer's academic career took him from Cologne and Berlin to Princeton. His research on Jewish mysticism, rabbinical literature, and the relationship between Judaism and early Christianity set new standards. But his path was not without tensions—whether in Cologne, the US, or as director of the Jewish Museum Berlin—in view of central questions about Jewish identity, politics of memory, and the limits of academic independence, which are now more than ever the focus of public debate.
