JMB Journal 27: Inventories: The Legacy of Salman Schocken

With Texts by Pulitzer Prize Winner Joshua Cohen

Salman Schocken’s (1877–1959) entrepreneurial activities were extremely significant: For one thing, for the development of the modern, welcoming department store for everyone; and for another, for spreading a new canon of Jewish culture and Jewish thought in Germany, Israel, and ultimately also in the United States. After having fled the Nazis, he founded new publishing companies in Palestine and the United States. Intellectual refugees from Europe found their spiritual home at Schocken Books in New York.

Sixty-five years after the death of the publisher, patron of the arts, zionist, art collector and businessman, the Jewish Museum Berlin is honoring Schocken’s work with the exhibition Inventories: The Legacy of Salman Schocken and with this issue of the JMB Journal.

Read the texts and poems written exclusively for the exhibition by Pulitzer Prize winner Joshua Cohen; further contributions by Emily Bilski, Caroline Jessen, Markus Krah, Martina Lüdicke und Monika Sommerer, Stefanie Mahrer, Kai Sina and Thomas Sparr. Including an interview with the JMB’s Director of Education and Digital Engagement Barbara Thiele.

The image shows the cover of JMB Journal No. 27: Several buildings are depicted in a row as a black-and-white collage; at the top is the lettering “JMB Journal,” and at the bottom right is “2025, No. 27.”
