Talking about the Middle East

Continuing Education

Three panels from a comic: two young people talking, then five young people talking, then the two from the first panel are standing under an apple tree.

Excerpt from the comic Amal, illustrated by Nathalie Frank. Published in the comic collection Wie geht es dir? 60 gezeichnete Gespräche nach dem 7. oktober 2023 (How Are You? – Sixty Illustrated Conversations After October 7, 2023), publisher: avant-Verlag, 2025

The situation in the Middle East is confusing, events are unfolding rapidly, and social media in particular is spreading emotionally charged opinions. Jews in Germany are being equated with Israelis, while Palestinians are being accused of sympathizing with the terrorist organization Hamas.

Since the 2023 terrorist attack on Israel and the ensuing war, public discourse in Germany has also been marked by antisemitism and racism. It is not always clear what constitutes antisemitism or racism versus a political opinion or criticism. This workshop focuses on participants’ own thoughts, feelings, and words regarding the situation in the Middle East. We aim to create a space where we can discuss the conflict respectfully. Participants will learn about the diverse experiences and perspectives of those affected in Germany. Using case studies, they will discuss and learn to recognize and contextualize anti-Semitic and racist statements in the context of the Middle East. Teachers and educators can take away ideas from this training to apply in their school settings.
