“MUTTERSPRACHE MAMELOSCHN” (Mother Tongue Mameloschn)
An event for FRIENDS OF THE JMB at the Maxim Gorki Theater
Lost in Berlin. The present. A family. Grandmother, mother and granddaughter live here, together, apart, and at odds with each other.
Three generations, three Jewish women in Germany rummage through mountains of stories and history as they search for the voids in their lives. Grandmother Lin lived as a communist and party-loyal artist in the GDR, losing her daughter Clara in the process. They seem to lack a common language. So they search for their “Mame-Loschn,” a mother tongue for themselves and others. In this new production, Sasha Marianna Salzmann presents a family story that is full of twists and turns, and told with plenty of chutzpah.
