Inside Out
Etgar Keret

Exhibition Preview

With Inside Out, the Jewish Museum Berlin will be presenting an exhibition by the Israeli author Etgar Keret. Taking memories of his mother as his point of departure, Keret has written nine new short stories specifically for this occasion, and this exhibition will be their world premiere. A running theme is Judaism’s core tradition of passing on memories from generation to generation.

21 Oct 2022 to 5 Feb 2023

The tone alternates between lighter and more serious, and their narrators’ ages vary from childhood to adulthood. The stories portray both day-to-day family life in Israel, where the author lives, and traumatic wartime experiences inspired by the life of the author's mother, who was born in Poland in 1934. All the stories will be available in three languages, in both print and audio versions: Etgar Keret has recorded himself reading his pieces in Hebrew and English.

Alongside the writing, the exhibition will present selected objects from the JMB’s collections as well as installations created in cooperation with contemporary artists. The interplay of memories, objects, and artistic installations allow visitors to enter new, emotionally charged associative spaces that deliberately defy conventional expectations of a museum visit.
