Family Valentin – a Journey of Remembrance in Pictures (in German)
Brothers Andreas and Thomas Valentin are gifting the Jewish Museum Berlin an extensive collection of photographs, drawings, letters and documents on their family history between Germany and Rio de Janeiro. Together with JMB curator Leonore Maier, they set out on a search for traces of their family's story, spanning over five generations.

In the nineteenth century, their great-great-grandfather Valentin Manheimer founded Berlin’s first ready-to-wear clothing store on Oberwallstraße and became a successful entrepren€. The grandparents and parents of the two brothers who were born in Brazil around 1950, left National Socialist Germany before the Second World War and fled to Rio de Janeiro. Their grandparents, Bruno and Marta Valentin, returned to Germany in 1967 after repeated visits there, while the rest of the family remained in Brazil. Art historian and photographer Andreas Valentin has documented this story in a multi-award-winning photographic essay. Now the original material is returning to Berlin for good.
