Samuel Adler was born in Mannheim, Germany, to cantor Hugo Chaim Adler and pianist Selma Adler, and emigrated to the USA in 1939 together with his parents. There he studied music with Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith and Walter Piston, among others. He has composed over 400 works, including five operas and six symphonies, and quickly became one of the leading American composers of his time. His compositions engage with both contemporary classical and traditional Jewish music. On this night, Samuel Adler – who at the age of 95 still regularly performs on stage – will present selected pieces to the audience.

Noah Bendix-Balgley has been an enthusiastic connoiss€ of Klezmer music since childhood. His Fidl-Fantazye is a Klezmer concert in which all the magic of this musical style unfolds.

The conversation will form a prelude to the concert Late Night: A Klezmer Evening, which the Berlin Philharmonic is staging on 22 April 2023. The program includes the Fidl-Fantazye, which Noah Bendix-Balgley will perform in an orchestration by Samuel Adler.
