Michael Sfard: The Jerusalem Dispute. The Fight for Human Rights in Israeli Courts
Lecture (video recording available)
A Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem asks a human rights lawyer to apply for an Israeli passport on his behalf. This would improve the situation of the client and his family and alleviate their suffering. At the same time, the acceptance of Israeli citizenship would be an act of confirmation and legitimacy of the Israeli authority over the occupied eastern part of the city.
A farmer in the West Bank, whose fields are beyond the Israeli border fence, goes to court to get a gate cut into the wall. Such a gate would help the farmer cultivate his field, but at the same time legitimize the wall itself.
