The Passerby (1982)
A Film from the Artur Brauner Collection at Our Library
The scene is Paris, 1980. The Paraguayan Ambassador is shot. While in custody, Max Baumstein tells his wife Lina the facts behind the crime: His father was murdered by Nazi thugs and he himself was taken in by a Mr. and Mrs. Wiener. Following the arrest of her husband, Elsa Wiener fled to Paris with the Jewish boy and worked in a dance hall. There she later met the Ambassador of Paraguay, who shamelessly exploited her fears about her husband.
Like other CCC films, this German-French co-production employs a frame story to address the Nazi past. This is Romy Schneider's last film and she plays a dual role as Elsa Wiener and her doppelganger Lina Baumstein.
With Romy Schneider, Michel Piccoli, and Helmut Griem. Directed by Jacques Rouffio.
