Another Country. Jewish in the GDR

Guided Tour

Jewish in the GDR: The exhibition Another Country considers part of German post-war history that has previously been paid little attention. It tells of Jewish experiences in the GDR – between hope and frustration, between antifascist self-image and socialist utopia, between the lived experience of being Jewish and the search for individual identity.

The interactive tour will guide you through each of the exhibition’s themed sections. Explore the varied and contradictory nature of Jewish life in the east of Germany – both within and beyond the eventual eight Jewish congregations in the GDR. The exhibition uses interviews, personal items, art, literature and film to give a voice to the people themselves. Individual cinematic portraits commissioned by the Jewish Museum Berlin widen the perspective to include the present day.

The concluding discussion raises questions about aspiration and reality, self-image, affiliation, and assumption – then and now, in the East and the West.
