9 November 1938

Public Tour

The focus is on the events surrounding the “Kristallnacht" on November 9, 1938, during which Jewish businesses across Germany were destroyed, and Jewish people were attacked, murdered, or deported to concentration camps. State-sponsored antisemitism entered a new phase with the events of November 9: violent assaults on Jewish individuals, businesses, and community institutions increased dramatically. The aim was to force Jewish people to emigrate from Germany.

Between 1933 and 1945, the Nazi regime issued hundreds of decrees and measures against Jews. These are printed on large banners hanging from the ceiling in the core exhibition in the Catastrophe Room, forming an installation that allows visitors to experience the extent and perfidy of bureaucratically decreed antisemitism in a spatial way.
