Tolerance of Ambiguity and the Jewish Perspective

Opening of the Lecture Series Where Does the Truth Lie? On the Tolerance of Ambiguity (in German)

In the first lecture of the series, Natan Sznaider introduces psychologist and psychoanalyst Else Frenkel-Brunswik (1908-1958) and the term she coined in the 1940s: “tolerance of ambiguity.” The term describes the ability to tolerate and accept multiple interpretations or outcomes. In 1914, a pogrom forced Else Frenkel-Brunswik and her family to flee Lemberg (present-day Lviv, Ukraine) for Vienna. She emigrated to the United States in 1938.
